However, as with many sources of information on the Web, finding and interpreting the right information is a challenge. This section of West Philadelphia Data and Information Resources helps guide you through various sources that provide information on environmental quality in West Philadelphia. As environmental quality is goverened by all three levels of government: federal, state, and local, the number of sources of information is vast. EPA AIR NOW. This is a direct link to air quality forecasts and current conditions in Pennsylvania. It provides continually updated information on ozone levels to help protect individuals who are susceptible to health problems stemming from poor air quality.
EPA's Air Quality Index. A basic primer explaining EPA's Air Quality Index. EPA Asthma & Indoor Environments Web site. EPA's Indoor Environments Division has launched a national public education and prevention program in response to the asthma epidemic in the United States. The goal of the outreach program is to raise public awareness of indoor environmental asthma triggers (e.g., secondhand smoke, dust mites, mold, pet dander, and cockroaches) and actions that can be taken to reduce children's exposure to them in homes, schools and child care settings. The EPA is working to insure that environmental management is fully incorporated into all asthma education and disease management programs. EPA Case Study on the Community Asthma Prevention Program of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. This case study—the first in a series—is intended to offer providers, health insurers, public health departments, and community-based organizations an overview of an asthma in-home intervention. The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's asthma management program, the Community Asthma Prevention Program, has an in-home intervention component that evaluates environmental asthma triggers and methods of mitigation in the home. City of Philadelphia Dept. of Public Health - Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program. The primary mission of the CLPPP is to educate community residents about lead poisoning prevention, to identify children at risk for lead poisoning, to analyze and track blood lead screenings and to ensure adequate home assessment and medical follow-up. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program. The goal of CDC is to eliminate childhood lead poisoning as a major public health problem. Screening children for lead poisoning will remain an essential activity until we have achieved the goal of primary prevention (eliminating hazards so that children are no longer exposed to lead and thus poisoned). Achieving this goal requires the partnership of federal and local governments and elements of the private sector involved in health, housing, and environmental activities. City of Philadelphia Household Hazardous Waste Information. Defines household hazardous waste (HHW) and contains a schedule of HHW drop-off events in Philadelphia. This pilot EPA site allows you to search for facilities in your community for the purpose of determining whether: EPA or State/local governments have conducted compliance inspections, violations were detected or enforcement actions were taken and penalties were assessed in response to environmental law violations. Managing Hazardous Waste in Your Community. This publication provides education and outreach about EPA's hazardous waste management program under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). These fact sheets provide a basic overview of EPA's hazardous waste regulations and include state hazardous waste contacts. Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Environment, Facility, Application, Compliance Tracking System (EFACTS).
