Roses
from Concrete. Roses from
the Concrete is a community empowerment project run through
Thomas Jefferson University’s Office of Diversity and Minority
Affairs
which seeks to constructively respond to the critical and devastating
crises facing inner-city and immigrant communities. The
On the Rise SAT Prep Program is a free nine week SAT prep course
for
high school students from low-income communities for whom commercial
test
preparation is unaffordable. The program will be going on between
the weeks
of January 25, 2004 and March 21, 2004 in preparation for the March
27,
2004 test date. The program will be running in at least two sites
in the
city including University City High and will consist of two classes
per
week - one math and one verbal - to be held after school (most
likely 4pm -
6pm). Each class will be taught by a tag team of two teachers -
so two math
teachers and two verbal teachers per site.
We are currently
looking for volunteers to join us as math and/or verbal
teachers for the spring. Between class time, preparation, and training,
the
expected time commitment is 4 hours per week. To find out more or how you can get involved, please contact us

SquashSmarts.
SquashSmarts is a Philadelphia youth enrichment program that combines
the game of squash with academic tutoring and mentoring of middle
school students. Squash serves as the hook that pulls students into
the program.
Upon their first introduction to the game in 6th grade, the students
are curious, inquisitive and excited about learning a new sport,
and
so
willingly sign on for the extra academic work required by all participants.
Students attend practice two afternoons per week—1 hour 15 minutes
of
squash followed by 1 hour 15 minutes of tutoring—and then two
hours
on Saturday mornings for squash play only. The 3-days per week
schedule
continues through the school year. Each team member benefits from
one-to-one tutoring with college students and adult volunteers
as well
as one-to-one mentoring with college student athletes. This personal
attention, tailored to each student's needs over the course of
a
three-year-long commitment to the program, is what makes SquashSmarts
so unique. To join us in this project, contact Isabel Mapp at 898-2020
